Chiefly letters to William's brother, Alfred A. Pray, dated 1839-1849, describing Ashford, contemporary New England politics, and William's plans for the future. Includes ALS to Sarah Anne Pray dated April 10, 1846. A diary begun upon Pray's departure from New London chronicles a seven-month voyage around Cape Horn on the Alfred and includes a description of Rio de Janeiro's slave trade. Additional papers include an ALS from Samuel Rowland to Othaniel Pray reporting the death of a deer shipped from New Orleans in July of 1851; an ALS from Joseph C. W. Cole to Sarah Anne Pray in 1893 requesting information about the Pray family; an undated manuscript map of Coloma, California showing William Pray's grave; a printed deed, completed in manuscript and dated 1867, ceding two cemetery plots in Providence, Rhode Island, from Grace Church to Alden C. Pray; several undated scraps of poetry, possibly by William H. Pray, a translation exercise and a page of notes. Includes transcriptions for some correspondence between the Pray brothers as well as a portion of Pray's diary.

William H. Pray taught school in Ashford, Connecticut before settling in New York to study law in 1844. In 1849 Pray joined a joint stock venture that hoped to share the profits of a voyage to the gold fields of California. Pray, as secretary of the company, departed New London, Connecticut on board the schooner Alfred on March 11, 1849. Pray died on September 18, 1850 and was buried in Coloma, California.
